Adam's Story:
Adam was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.) July 29, 2014 at St Jude Children's Research Hospital. After an incredible summer of travel to Germany for his youth group's Spiritual Pilgrimage; college visits to Duke, Wake Forest, UVA, and UNC; being a counselor at "Mud Camp"; rafting the Ocoee river rapids; and preparing for his junior year of high school at St George's he began to experience pain in his hands. Concerned about possible arthritis, family friend, Dr. Hugh Holt ran some basic blood tests. No one would have imagined Hugh would tell Adam, this easy going, healthy, all around nice guy, that he had cancer. Life will never be the same for Adam, his family, or his friends. St. Jude's A.L.L. treatment requires daily or weekly chemo treatment for 2 and 1/2 years (until Jan. 2017) followed by annual checkups for 7 more years (until 2024) before they can declare Adam cured. That's a long time, but hopefully so is life!

Adam decided to call his support community, "Adam's Army" because he believes together he will be healed and along the way the Army can help heal the world. Then he added the phrase, "Make Every Day Count" to encourage you to join him in learning to value the gift of life. His journey has been tough and he has a long road ahead, but he has chosen to let cancer be his teacher. He has already learned that a positive attitude really does help as he approaches each chemo treatment; he knows that community offers mutual support; he believes making each day count adds quality and value to a life that will end someday for each person; he doesn't believe that cancer sucks, but that it offers lessons he can choose to learn or run from; he believes there not only will be a cure for all cancers, but there will be prevention; and that each person can make the world better when we pay attention to what is needed, heed the call, and make a move to help. The moves can be so very small....a smile to someone alone; big like raising money for St. Jude; or even being nicer to your own body through good nutrition and exercise. He created the Adam's Army Facebook page for two reasons. One is to offer a place for you to share what you are up to in the world, receive and offer motivation, and discover ways you can help. The other is to have a place for him to update the community on his medical progress and news about his efforts to help others, especially fellow St. Jude patients. Please invite others to like the page and join Adam's Army. Adam and his family have really learned that your presence, prayers, and support truly do make every day count even more for him. We so appreciate each of you!!!
